GreyWing: Artificial Field Project

Artificial Field interrogated works spanning 50 years and a range of approaches exploring the boundary between high fidelity representation of natural sounds and overtly artificial, manufactured recreations. This project to explore works for instruments and artificial field recordings culminated in a survey of works from 1968 to the present by Erickson, Turley, Barclay, Terren, Burtner, Mollison, LeBaron, Wolfe, Ablinger and Vickery, publicly performed and recorded by the Ensemble GreyWing. The recorded work was accompanied by published artwork by Michael Terren, and program notes and artwork by Vickery.
Integration of acoustic instruments included transcription of harmonic and inharmonic sound into notation using traditional and spectrographic transcription and including examples of visual spectromorphology (Blackburn), Instrumental mimesis (O’Callaghan), polytemporality, topographic and environmental data. The project explored an innovative and novel method for live spatial sound distribution using a mix of traditional and bluetooth speakers in non-traditional performance venues. The sound system was driven by iPads to facilitate such a system in an automated fashion and without a live audio technician.
