GreyWing Ex Machina Project

The project was a survey of works for instruments and mechanical sound by Erickson, Rawes, Truax, Hannan, Saunders, Meadowcroft, di Scipio, Ablinger and Vickery publicly performed, recorded and released by the Ensemble GreyWing on the Tone List Label. Artwork and program notes were created.

Works spanned 7 countries, 50 years and a range of approaches to interaction with the mechanical world: exploring raw and edited field recordings. Such a survey has not been completed before. Integration of acoustic instruments included transcription of harmonic and inharmonic sound into notation. Scores used traditional and spectrographic transcription and included examples of Ablinger’s “Phonorealism” and di Scipio’s “sound is the interface” concepts. For the performances software was developed allowing the precise synchronisation of video, audio, scores and. external speakers and live environmental recording without a technician. .

Concerts at all three New Music series Tura, Tone List and Outcome Unknown. An A6 concertina score, featuring laser cut metallic bookends with a concertina score of Vickery's “takadanobaba”, postcard and liner notes.
