GreyWing - Banksias under Snow

     "strange and beautiful environmental music"

The Banksias under Snow project explores the sounds and shapes of nature through a series of recent works by Western Australian and international composers. The project involved concerts and community workshops in Dwellingup, Ellenbrook and Fremantle, recording for an Album, and an exhibition of scores and sound art at Ellenbrook Arts. Nine new works were created for the project interacting with field recordings, organic, visual and tactile forms of the environment using methods of interaction between “real” geological and biological structures found in the natural world. International collaborations with Terri Hron (Canada) and Elisabeth Schimana (Austria) were also performed and recorded.
The exhibition Banksias under Snow, was mounted at Ellenbrook Arts Gallery, 1 May - 31 May 2022. Sixteen Western Australian, Australian and international composers/artists were represented. The works drew on: flora and fauna - including banksia, eucalypt, grevillea, hakea, cladia, dryandra, everlasting, leaves and flowers/seed pods, wardang (crow), mannaitch (white cockatoo); geographical and meteorological features - including; Rain, flooding, the Blackwood River, Cowcowing Lakes, Salt River, and Dowerin Lakes, Pallinup River, Wellington Forest, Koi Kyenunu-ruff (Stirling Range); and speculative pasts and futures - including ice-age banksias, sounds of extinct animals and synthetic field recordings.
